(196) Student-Pharmacist Led Education of Student Athletes

Objective : To assess the effectiveness of student pharmacist-led education on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student athletes' knowledge of supplements and banned substances.

Methods: Student athletes at North Dakota State University were provided a 20-minute educational presentation on supplements and banned substances. The student athletes were asked to complete a knowledge assessment before and after the presentation. The assessment consisted of 13 questions designed to evaluate the impact of the student pharmacist-led education on student athlete’s knowledge of NCAA Division I guidelines on supplements and banned substances

Results: Two hundreded thirty-three student athletes completed the pre and post knowledge assessment. There was a statistically significant difference in their scores before (M=9.75; SD=.10) and after (M=11.10; SD=.10) the student pharmacist-led education; t(232)=-11.855, p=0.00.

Conclusions: Student pharmacist-led education on supplements and banned substances resulted in a positive increase in student athlete knowledge of the subject. Schools of pharmacy should consider implementing similar student pharmacist-led educational programs to student athletes.
